View From Highest Mountain In Guilin With Peaks Of Karst Mountains Below.
A minibus took us from the city of Guilin up to the highest mountain, on which had been built a transmitter station. When we got to the top of the highest mountain, it was the scenery below that attracted us the most, rather than the transmitter station itself. There were many karst mountain peaks to be seen, and had the far distance not been shrouded in mist, then we would have seen many more. Before the new developments and the high rise tower blocks had been built in Guilin, views of the mountains surrounding the city, were easily viewed. To climb the highest mountain to enjoy the wonderful scenery would have needed much physical effort, before the new road was built. The new road winding up the mountain has now opened views of the surrounding scenery, parts of which have been the subjects of many Chinese paintings.

Approaching Guilin by train gives views of many karst mountains surrounding the city, but when arriving in Guilin the surrounding mountains are not so easily seen. Views of the mountains, from many locations in the city, are hidden by high rise apartment blocks and offices. Without a doubt, for the best views of the Guilin mountains, it is necessary to take to the air, or climb the highest mountain in the area!
** The highest mountain is not necessarily the tallest, considering the difference in height between the peak and the surrounding base of the mountain. There is no precise definition of surrounding base, but Mount McKinley, Mount Kilimanjaro and Nanga Parbat are possible candidates for the tallest mountain on land by this measure. The bases of mountain islands are below sea level, and given this consideration Mauna Kea is the world's tallest mountain, rising about 10,200 meters (33,500 feet) from the Pacific floor. ** Src: Wikipedia.org |
