Stone Steps On The Mountain Used For Three Hour Walk To Local City.
We had travelled in the comfort of a hired minibus on a long winding road up the mountain from the city below, to visit Wen's old family home. It was the first time that for Wen going back home would not have involved a three hour walk from the nearby city, up and over the mountain. This was something he often spoke about when he was enjoying the convenience of shopping in the local supermarkets, and comparing the task of having to make a three hour walk from his old home in China, over the mountains to buy provisions, and then carrying the goods on a return three hour walk back home. Wen had been told by his family and friends who were still living in his old home town up in the mountains, that the new road up the mountain had been constructed. To be travelling up the mountain road was a new experience for him, and certainly a time when all the wonderful scenery could be enjoyed in comfort.
The stone steps on the mountain were a challenge for Wen to recall all the efforts that would have been made in his earlier years, to walk up and down these steps to get back and too, to the nearby city, to buy goods for his family. For Wen's two young children it was an exciting adventure which they enjoyed, although they had to be restrained from taking the risks that would be unknown to them. ![]()
Despite the new road up the mountain having been completed, the steps that had previously been used to walk from the old town to the city below, appeared to be well maintained. It is unknown whether some people still use these steps to get to the local city, or whether the steps are maintained for recreational purposes. No attempt was made to use the steps to walk up to the top of the mountain, but the view of the surrounding scenery from the mountain top would certainly have been enjoyable, if not spectacular!
