Wooden Crafts Of Bowls And Tubs Handmade By Chinese Man In Ancient City.

The ancient Chinese city we visited was an opportunity to study the old style streets and buildings, but through the open door of one house in this ancient city we saw examples of the craftsmanship of a Chinese carpenter. The wooden crafts on view included bowls and tubs, handmade with tools, the like of which might have been used in the Ming Dynasty. My friend was very excited at seeing these wood crafts as he was in the process of furnishing his apartment with furniture replicas from Ming and Qing dynasties. We went in to speak with the Chinese carpenter who had handmade these wooden bowls. He was very willing to show us other examples of his wood craftsmanship, and my friend learnt that the lacquer used to preserve the woodcrafts was the same as he had been using on the new wood furniture at his apartment.

The wooden bowls and wooden tubs made by the Chinese craftsman, with his handtools, were all treated with a mixture of 'raw lacquer' and 'tung oil'. Both these items are produced by trees growing naturally, so they are environmentaly friendly. The craftsmen producing handmade wooden bowls and furniture in ancient times, would have used the same preservative. This mixture not only enhances the appearance of the handmade crafts, but gets harder as time progresses, giving further protection to the work of the craftsman.

Before we left the workshop of the Chinese craftsman my friend bought the small wooden bowl held in the hands of the craftsman, in the photo above. It was a memento of a visit to a workshop of a Chinese craftsman who was handmaking wooden items that were of particular interest to my friend.
