Chinese Man Walks On Stone Slabs Of Street Between Houses Of Stone Walls In Ancient City.
Streets of stone slabs, houses of stone walls, no cars, lorries, nor buses, perhaps were features that had contributed to the survival of the ancient Chinese city we visited in Hunan Province. We travelled by car from Huaihua to the modern part of the city, to the hustle and bustle of vehicles on the streets, and Chinese people busy in well stocked shops. Walking through a narrow side street and then up stone steps, we were in a different city of ancient times. All the streets were of stone slabs, and the buildings constructed with stone walls.
In one part of the ancient city there was a Chinese style gate with a roof of upturned eaves across the stone slab street, on which walked an elderly Chinese man with a walking stick, and carrying a bamboo basket. He walked on the street of stone slabs safe in the knowledge that there were no cars nor lorries to cause him harm. ![]()
In this part of the ancient city some of the stone walls were decorated with Chinese characters and from the Gate over the stone slabs of the street hung two red Chinese lanterns.
