Nanjing Road Overpass Not Found, Leave Shanghai By Train From New Railway Station.
We took a taxi from our hotel that took us through the tunnel under the Huangpo River. After lunch at a ''food street'' we took a taxi to Nanjing Road, or at least to the nearest point that the taxi was able to take us. There had been some
changes since 1987 so the ''overpass'' had now been made into an ''underpass'' and the section of Nanjing Road, pedestrianized. Yang wanted to go to visit one of his contacts in Shanghai, so Michael and I sat on one of the street benches to wait for him, where soon we had the attention of people sitting opposite to us. The mother of one young boy wanted to have a photo taken of her son sitting with me, and that is what he did quite happily!
On the day we were to leave Shanghai, the weather turned clear and sunny, so it would have been ideal for another visit to 'The Tower''. On the night before we had walked from our hotel to another new building in Pudong, where everything seemed to be on a grand scale. The building in question was several floors high, each floor of shops serving a particular demand. Two of the floors were devoted to ''food'', snack bars, cafes, restaurants. We had our meal at a vegetarian restaurant, two of the dishes being of roast beef, and duck's feet, or rather replicas made to look like them. Very strange!A taxi took us from our hotel to the railway station, and the first part of our taxi ride was held up by traffic hold-ups, but later we were on clearer roads. The train station had only in recent years been completed and was very modern, looking from the outside like an upturned glass bowl. Our train journey from Shanghai to Nanning would take about 28 hours, Wrexham to London return five times non-stop! We did have soft-sleepers and could stroll about the train at any time, so the journey was more interesting than just going up and down by 'plane. At Nanning railway station we would be met by Ri Sheng; about 17 years earlier he had come to meet me for the first time at the airport in Beijing! Much has changed since then. Chinese Opera Singers In Park Of Nanning, Known As The Green City
When we first visited Nanning in 1990 the roads were almost deserted. It was the bicycle that people used most to travel about the city; now it is the car or motorbike. Nanning is known as the Green City, and rightly so for the number of trees planted, and for its City Parks.
In one park we went to we came
across a group of players and singers, who were singing Chinese Opera Songs, well suited by their costumes and facial makeup. In another area of Nanning there was the Exhibition Hall, in the grounds of which were thousands of flowering plants, most if not all in pots.
