Only about 30% of children in Niger go to school in Africa because the shortage of funds for education means that a sufficient number of schools cannot be opened. In the countryside the children cannot go to school because there is no school for them to go to. When I went to visit one school, it was evident that the children were very intelligent. When I taught them some Chinese words, eg., ''Nihao = Hello'', "Zai jian = Goodbye", they were eager and attentive, and I am sure they will never forget the few words of Chinese, they so quickly learned.

According to UNESCO's BLAH Regional overview on sub-Saharan Africa, in 2000 only 58% of children were enrolled in primary schools, the lowest enrollment rate of any region. UNESCO also reported marked gender inequalities: in most parts of Africa there is much higher enrolment by boys, but in some there are actually more girls, due to sons having to stay home and tend to the family farm. Africa has more than 40 million children, almost half the school-age child population, receiving no schooling. Two-thirds of these are girls.
