One of the highlights of this visit to China in 2009, was being in front of some of the Round Houses in Fujian. We had previously seen many pictures of the round houses in China, but to actually stand in front of one of the Hakka Round Houses, was a remarkable experience. It was a very impressive sight to see a round house looking like a fortress. A reason why the Hakka People built these round houses, was to protect themselves from aggression and theft.

When we entered the round house through the white coloured doorway, we were surprised to find many of the Hakka people busy sorting tea leaves ready to put into packets, whilst others were attending their stalls of souveniers which they were selling to visitors to the Round House. One of the Hakka women was standing by her snackbar, busy cooking food. All of the activities on the ground floor of the Hakka Round House, could well have been witnessed in any open market in towns or cities.

Not far from the actual round houses, there were a number of models of the houses from which it was possible to see the circular layout inside a round house. The two top floors of the round houses were used for individual homes for the Hakka families. Below were the storage areas and the ground floor was for livestock, and stalls, and the ground floor of the round houses also had their water wells.
